Celebrating “National Cupcake Week” with Chocolate Orange Cupcakes

September is officially the month for baking! – Not only is the Great British Bake Off in full swing (don’t even get me started on it moving to Channel 4!), our kitchens are cool enough for us to turn on our ovens and it also holds “National Cupcake Week.”

After doing a spot of research I realised that there is actually a national week for everything, and International Days for the likes of carrots, Nutella and porridge! I struggle with the image of everybody in the World celebrating these days but I for one think they are another fantastic reason to get in the kitchen and get cooking!

So with that in mind, dust off your wooden spoons and try your hand at this delicious recipe for Chocolate Orange Cupcakes, (or one of my other favourite recipes linked below)……

Makes 12 large cupcakes

  • Zest 1 large orange
  • 6 oz Stork or soft butter
  • 6 oz caster sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 5 oz self raising flour
  • 1 oz cocoa powder
  • 2 oz dark chocolate chips

For the Icing

  • 175g cream cheese
  • 450g icing sugar
  • 125g unsalted butter – softened
  • Grated zest of 1 orange

Preheat the oven to 180’C

Place 12 cupcake wrappers into a 12 hole cupcake tin.

Beat together the butter and sugar until pale and creamy

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating to combine after each one.

Sift in the flour and the cocoa power and then fold the mixture together with the orange zest and the chocolate chips.

Divide the mixture between the 12 cases and bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes until springy to touch.

While the cupcakes are baking whisk together the ingredients for the icing until smooth.

Cool the cupcakes on a wire rack and once cool ice the cup cakes and decorate with whatever you think will look pretty and taste delicious.

Not a fan or orange, or just want to go crazy and make multiple flavoured cupcakes then one of these recipes might tickle your fancy….

Thanks for a great looking recipe, anything with chocolate in is always a winner. I shall add the recipe for my winter to-do list……. I live in Spain you see and will wait until the Spanish seasonal orange are harvested and at their best.

Cupcake week, as you say there is a day or week for everything these days….. and no I won’t get started on the Great British Bake Off. Talking British though for a moment, where did the word “cupcake” come from? For me they were always buns…… is this another Americanism we have picked up?

I use the word muffin without problems as muffins tend to be made differently to buns, with dry ingredients being mixed together, wet ingredients being mixed together, then both mixtures being combined without overworking. Buns are all about elbow grease and the beating of the ingredients one by one.

Cupcakes, buns, muffins, we are confusing the poor Spaniards I live with…… but at least it keeps many people in work as English teachers!

    Thanks for sharing,

Wow, I bet this would be incredible with fresh oranges, you’re very lucky to have so much sunshine and amazing produce!

And yes you are right about the naming confusion – I would hazard a guess that its a cake that was originally baked in a cup or resembles the shape of one, which I guess is kind of logical!?

Wow! Looks great. It is not national cupcake week here in SA, but I’ve randomly did a post this morning on Vanilla cupcakes with Lemon buttercream icing. Hop over for a South African twist 😉 Nice photos

I have been browsing online more than 3 hours these
days, but I never found any fascinating article like yours.

It is pretty price sufficient for me. In my view, if all site owners and bloggers made just
right content as you probably did, the internet will be
much more helpful than ever before. http://bing.org
